The great Italian grape debate - La Grande Tavola Hosted by Nick Ryan
What happens when Italy’s most celebrated grape varieties met their Australian counterparts at the same table? Burnside Village ambassador and acclaimed wine writer Nick Ryan answered that question at La Grande Tavola, an immersive food and wine masterclass hosted at Eccoci Ristorante on Wednesday 19 August.
The event paired a bespoke five-course degustation with a series of considered wine pairings. Each course presented an Italian wine from its grape variety’s home region alongside an Australian wine of that same grape, inviting guests to taste how place, climate and craft can transform a familiar variety into something entirely new.
Ryan said he guided guests through the stories behind each wine, sharing the observations and contrasts that have made Italian varieties such an exciting part of Australia’s contemporary wine conversation.
“Italy is home to hundreds of native grape varieties, and a number of them have found a second home in Australia over recent decades. Regions, like our very own McLaren Vale have become known for growing classic Italian varieties such as Sangiovese, Fiano and Vermentino, while cooler areas like the Adelaide Hills are experimenting with grapes like Nebbiolo. It’s this delicious conversation that La Grande Tavola explored,” he said.
“A single grape variety can tell a completely different story depending on where it’s grown,” he said. “Place an Italian wine beside its Australian counterpart and you can taste the climate, the soil and the hand of the maker. That’s where the magic is.”
Burnside Village Centre General Manager Jodie Kannane said the event reflected the centre’s commitment to delivering premium food, wine and lifestyle experiences in the Village.
“La Grande Tavola was an invitation to slow down, take a seat and experience food and wine in a way that felt personal and beautifully considered,” she said. “With Nick’s extensive knowledge and Eccoci’s modern approach to Italian dining, guests experienced an evening that felt distinctly Burnside Village - refined and memorable.”
It was a privilege to welcome guests to this immersive masterclass at Eccoci guided by acclaimed wine writer and Burnside Village Wine Ambassador, Nick Ryan.
